Assignments
If you have read through the notes you know that you have a lot to do this week. Here’s the summary:
Cafe Townsend project
Using your files from the Adobe Tutorial for the Cafe Townsend project, read part 3 of the Adobe Tutorial: Creating your first website. In part 3: Adding content to the page, you will learn how to insert content into your page. (Please note this section has eight pages). Using your files from last week, reproduce the page as detailed in part 3. Also complete the part 4: Formatting your page with CSS exercise. Read part 4 and follow the directions on how to format your page using CSS.
Image Slicing exercise

Please be sure that you name your web project folder “midterm_lastname.” And be sure you upload your entire folder and not just the individual html pages and images folder. Please review the FTP video demonstration to make sure you understand how to do this.
Here are the 8 things I will be looking for when grading your midterm projects:

Thank you so much for your Assignment 1 and Quiz 1 files. I have posted all of your grades to-date, so if anything is missing from the grade book you can safely assume it’s because I did not receive your file(s). If you have any homework outstanding, you can turn it in for a late grade. But please, do not fall behind with your work because it is very difficult to catch up on such a tight 6 week schedule. Also, please notice thatin the Journal section of the smconline.org site I have included a note about your assignment 1 and quiz 1. Take a moment to review my note about your work.
If you could upload all your assignments for the week in one zip file, that seems to work best. Be sure to include your last name in the file name. For example, you can name your file week02_lastname.zip.
This week we will discuss file structure and FTP (file transfer protocol). I’ve created video files with a demonstration of both of these topics. You can watch the videos using the YouTube file embedded in the week 02 notes– or for a larger version, you can download the .mov file from the week 02 notes. You’ll need QuickTime Player in order to view the file. If you don’t have the QuickTime Player, I have included a link to a free download in the week 02 notes.
I’d like you to practice using FTP to connect to the class server as outlined in the notes and the video. I will send you the password in an email. If I do not have your most current email address, please let me know.
I’ve also given you the assignment for your Midterm Project. Your Midterm Project is due by midnight, Friday, January 30. Please read through the assignment carefully and post any questions you have about the Midterm to the discussion area on the smcline.org site. You’ll need to upload your Midterm Project to the class server so it is important that you understand how to use the FTP feature in Dreamweaver.
This week we start to talk about tables and how to create a structure (or grid, you could say) for a web site page. Please be sure to watch the videos I have included in the week 02 notes, I think they will be very helpful. Again, I have embedded the YouTube videos (in three parts) in the week 02 notes, or you can download the larger version.
Your assignments for this week are to complete the Adobe tutorial and to re-create the Cupcake Mama page as I demonstrate in the video(s). The Adobe tutorial I have assigned literally walks you through the layout of a page that’s already been designed.
I have added a “Tables questions” topic to the discussion area if you have any questions. Please post any questions you have here.
Remember that Dreamweaver is only a HTML editing tool and you’ll need to complete the design of your web site in Photoshop before you start building it in Dreamweaver. Next week, we’ll talk about the design process and go through all the steps.
Your assignment for Monday, January 19 is to download the set of files in part 1 of the Adobe tutorial and reproduce the page layout as detailed in part 2.
Also, to recreate the Cupcake Mama web page using a table structure. All the files you will need for this assignment is in the wek 02 notes.
And finally to complete Quiz 02.
After you have completed these assignments, please upload the zipped folder with your work to the DropBox on the smconline.org site by noon, Monday, January 19.
Note: On the assignments section located in the main navigation of this site, I also post your assignments for the week.
Have a wonderful week!

Hi class!
Thank you to all of you who have introduced yourself in the Discussion area on the smconline.org. If you haven’t done so already, you may want to read through the introductions so you can meet your fellow class mates.
Important note: It is very important that you keep up with the class notes, assignments and quizzes for this class. Your grade will be lowered by a full grade for any work handed in late. (I DO NOT accept any work later than a week from the due date.) Please keep up with the work — because the class is only 6 weeks it moves quickly!
Just a reminder about some important details about the class and your assignment:
- As noted in the Introduction information, it is necessary to have basic Photoshop skills for this class. If anyone does not have these skills, please email me to discuss. Based on my experience, it’s difficult for students to keep up with the class if they’re struggling with learning Photoshop at the same time.
- It is also important that you have basic HTML skills. Some of you who have taken GrDes 65 — for those who haven’t, I require that you demonstrate basic HTML skills in order to proceed with this class.
- Please be sure you have purchased, or have ordered, the required textbook for this class. Information about the book is in the class syllabus
- Note I’ve added discussion topics for general questions and questions specific to the week 01 notes for this week. (All the topics are included in the pull-down menu for the Discussion section.) Please make use of the Discussion section of smconline.org to ask any questions you have about the class and this week’s notes and assignments. Also note there is a “Student Forum” section for students to pose questions about outside or personal web projects.
- I’m available for “virtual” office hours through the chat feature on the smconline.org site. If you have a specific problem and need special help, please email me to set up a time. I’d like to use the chat feature to answer specific problems that can’t be answered through the Discussion threads.
Reminder:
Please be sure to read through the Introduction section, Syllabus, and the Class 01 notes.
Your assignment is to Introduce yourself in the Discussion area of this site and to complete the Assignment 1 and Quiz 1. Post both as a zip file to the “DropBox” on the smconline.org site by noon, Monday, January 12. Please be sure to include your name in your file names. For example: yourlastname_week1.zip.
Please let me know if you have any questions and post the questions to the Discussion section.
